Classic Australian Wooden Power Boat Association

The Classic Australian Wooden Power Boat Association started out in 1995 as a web based point of contact for owners and enthusiasts of classic wooden speedboats, race boats, hydro-planes and similar craft. This group of boats was not included in any other group or club, so we decided to do something about it ourselves. Many boats were already lost and many more were still being scrapped. Through our presence, we hoped to create an awareness in the community that these old boats were important and should be retained.

It was soon discovered that there were quite a few of us out there who appreciated these old woodies and their place in Australia. Although spread far and wide, enthusiasts were mainly from Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney.

Most members have a timber ski or race boat that is still in regular use or are working on getting one that way. The vast majority of boats that have been restored (to various degrees) are used - very few boats are “show ponies” that only sit on a trailer. All that said, you don't have to own an old wooden speed boat to become a member, you only need to share our passion.

The local groups get together several times a year. These meetings usually take the form of a BBQ lunch, then a run in the boats. We also display boats at various shows and events around the country. The Association holds its annual regatta in Narrandera, NSW, around October each year, which attracts members and boats from many parts of the country. These “get togethers” are an opportunity for everyone to look at other boats, talk about problems they may be having, restoration tips, mechanical tips - anything. It's the old story, a group of like minded people getting together and talking about their passion and hobby. These meetings are a family affair, with wives, partners and kids coming along.

The Association currently has approximately 80 members.
